Love Will Return in Another Way

After Kafka and the lost doll: a poem about how love changes form but never truly leaves. For Kafka, the doll, and the girl who waited.

In a park where tears first met the ground, A writer paused, then knelt down low. A child had lost her truest friend— A doll, now gone, with nowhere to go. But he spoke not of endings, loss, or grief, He said, "She's traveling, far from here." And each day brought a letter home, With tales of laughter, wonder, fear. She sailed on ships and crossed through lands, She learned new words and songs to sing. She missed the girl, she said with care, But change, she wrote, is a natural thing. And when the final letter came, He placed a new doll in her hands. "Look," he smiled, "she's come back changed, From oceans, skies, and distant sands." Inside her dress, a folded note, In Kafka's hand, a truth would stay— "Everything you love may vanish once, But love returns in another way."
