Terms of service
Last updated: 27 August 2026
These terms cover reading, subscribing, buying and submitting work at Love’s Reckoning. They are written plainly on purpose — if anything here is unclear, write to us and we will explain it.
1. Who these terms are with
This website is operated by Ella Tan, publishing as Love’s Reckoning (“we”, “us”). By using the site, buying a subscription, booking a class or event, downloading a manuscript or submitting work, you agree to these Terms of Service.
Questions about these terms: write@lovesreckoning.com.
2. Accounts
Some features — the Reader membership, the Kingdom Reader manuscript, class materials and your purchase library — require an account. You are responsible for keeping your login details secure and for everything that happens under your account.
You must provide accurate information when registering, and you must be old enough to enter a contract in your country of residence. Accounts may be suspended where these terms are breached.
3. Subscriptions and recurring billing
Subscriptions (including the Reader membership and the €9/month Kingdom Reader access) are billed in advance on a recurring monthly basis until cancelled. Prices are shown at checkout and include applicable tax where indicated.
Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period using your saved payment method. You can cancel at any time from the billing portal on your account page; cancellation stops future renewals and your access continues until the end of the period already paid for.
We may change subscription prices or benefits. Existing subscribers will be notified before a price change takes effect and may cancel before it applies.
Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card details.
4. Digital purchases, classes and refunds
Digital items (manuscripts, letters, recordings, class materials) are delivered immediately or at a stated release date. By purchasing, you agree that delivery begins right away and that the statutory right of withdrawal for digital content is waived once access is granted, to the extent permitted by law.
Classes and workshops may be rescheduled or cancelled by us; in that case you may choose a replacement date or a full refund. If you cannot attend, contact us before the start date and we will do our best to move your place.
Physical items (books) are subject to availability and the shipping terms shown at checkout. Faulty or damaged goods will be replaced or refunded.
Anything not covered above: write to write@lovesreckoning.com and we will deal with refund requests fairly and in line with EU consumer law.
5. Access to gated work
A subscription or purchase grants you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to read, print and keep a copy of the relevant work for your own private use.
Access links are issued to you individually. Sharing accounts, download links or manuscript files, uploading them elsewhere, or reselling access is not permitted and may end your access without refund.
6. Intellectual property
All poems, plays, essays, translations, images and site design remain the property of Ella Tan or the respective rights holder. Nothing on this site may be reproduced, performed, adapted, recorded or distributed commercially without written permission.
Short quotation for review, teaching or criticism is welcome with clear attribution to Ella Tan and a link to this site.
Performance and licensing of the plays — including The Demolition of Love and The Kingdom of Paper — require a separate licence. See the licensing page or contact us.
7. Submissions from writers
When you submit a poem, screenplay or other literary work, you keep full copyright in it. You grant us a non-exclusive licence to read it, and — if it is accepted and published here — to display it on the site with your byline and to share short extracts to promote it.
You confirm the work is yours, is not plagiarised, and does not defame anyone or infringe another person’s rights or privacy. You can ask us to remove your published submission at any time.
We do not pay for submissions unless a separate agreement says so, and we are not obliged to publish anything submitted.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to: post or submit unlawful, hateful, harassing, defamatory or sexually exploitative material; impersonate another person; publish someone else’s private information; scrape, mine or bulk-download the site’s content, including for training machine-learning models, without written permission; attempt to break, probe or overload the site or bypass paywalls and access controls; or use the site for spam, advertising or fraud.
We may remove content and suspend access where this section is breached, without refund in cases of serious or repeated breach.
9. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you give us, for keeping your account credentials private, for having a valid payment method for any subscription you keep active, and for the content you submit or post.
If you buy access on behalf of an organisation, you confirm you are authorised to do so and that the organisation is bound by these terms.
10. The creative work is fiction
The plays and poems published here are works of fiction. Characters, names, dialogue and events are imagined or dramatized, and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is not intended as a statement of fact about them.
11. Availability and liability
We aim to keep the site available and the content accurate, but we provide it “as is”. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, and we may change, pause or withdraw parts of the site.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability arising from your use of the site or any purchase is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded, and your statutory consumer rights are unaffected.
12. Ending these terms
You can stop using the site and cancel any subscription at any time. We may suspend or close an account where these terms are breached, or where required by law.
Sections on intellectual property, acceptable use and liability continue to apply after your account ends.
13. Changes, law and disputes
We may update these terms; the current version with its effective date is always published here. Material changes affecting subscribers will be notified in advance.
These terms are governed by the law of the Netherlands, and disputes fall to the competent Dutch courts, without affecting any mandatory consumer protections available to you where you live.
How we handle personal data is set out in the privacy notice.
